From Mat’s trips

A feel for Pioneer Square

Follow First Avenue south from downtown into brick buildings, Occidental Square and Seattle’s historic core. The Underground Tour offers one way to explore the area’s history.

The district is also a threshold to the stadiums. Lumen Field and T-Mobile Park sit just south, and the neighborhood takes on a different rhythm around events. I lived beside the stadiums and worked nearby, so game-day movement is part of how I remember this area.

Shape your day

  1. Walk south from Pike Place along First Avenue, noting the transition in architecture.

  2. Center the visit on Occidental Square and a reserved Underground Tour.

  3. Add lunch, comedy or a historic bar to suit your interests.

  4. Continue to Lumen Field or T-Mobile Park for a game or stadium-area walk.
