A feel for Capitol Hill

Broadway, Pike and Pine give Capitol Hill its main walking structure. Concert venues, bars, queer nightlife, unusual shops and late-night energy make this one of the clearest places to experience contemporary Seattle culture.

Volunteer Park offers a quieter landscape and residential edge. Cal Anderson is a social center, with people gathering on the grass, playing sports and skating. My own orientation starts around 14th and Union, where I lived, then extends toward Broadway and Pike Pine.

Choose the evening you want: live music, queer nightlife, karaoke or a cocktail stop. Wildrose, Rock Box and The Doctor’s Office are places from my neighborhood notes to consider.

Shape your day

  1. Afternoon: Volunteer Park and the residential streets beside it.

  2. Early evening: walk Broadway and Cal Anderson, then eat along Pike Pine or 15th and Union.

  3. Night: choose a concert, queer bar, karaoke or cocktail reservation.

  4. Avoid driving. Use Link or reserve parking in advance with a parking service if a car is unavoidable.
