A feel for Seattle

Begin with the familiar Seattle: Pike Place Market, the Space Needle and Seattle Center, MoPOP, the Fremont Troll and the working waterfront. Then choose neighborhoods based on your time, interests and tolerance for distance.

Downtown is a straightforward base for a first visit. The Inn at the Market puts you close to Pike Place, while the Fairmont offers the grander downtown hotel experience. Seattle Center can fill much of a day when you combine the Space Needle with its neighboring museums.

Treat the waterways as destinations. Seward Park is my preferred Lake Washington day. Olympic Sculpture Park and the Elliott Bay trail offer a quieter transition out of downtown. UW adds a campus walk and, on a clear day, a view of Rainier.

The neighborhoods each offer something different: Capitol Hill for culture and nightlife, Ballard for food and Nordic history, Fremont for an eccentric waterfront day, Magnolia for Discovery Park and views, and Pioneer Square for the historic core.

Shape your day

  1. Day 1: Pike Place, downtown, waterfront, Seattle Center and an evening in Capitol Hill or Belltown.

  2. Day 2: Choose one north-side neighborhood day such as Ballard plus the Locks, or Fremont plus Gas Works.

  3. Day 3: Choose water and landscape: UW and the Montlake Cut, Seward Park, Discovery Park or a neighborhood-specific guide.

  4. Cruise departure: use a direct ride to the correct terminal rather than assuming the nearest bus stop serves the embarkation point safely or conveniently.
