A feel for North Cascades

North Cascades is a place of trees, water, distance and commitment. A scenic first visit and a backpacking objective deserve very different plans.

My anchor experience was the East Bank route beside Ross Lake toward Desolation Peak. The shoreline, bridges and forest were part of the experience, not just an approach to the destination.

I slipped on a wet rock while carrying a large pack. That memory stays with me: slow down at crossings and protect the layers you need to keep dry. Leave room for sun protection too, even on a trip you picture as forested.
